Bio-Diversity & Security

At Four Crosses Nursery, biodiversity and bio-security are at the forefront of our operations. We understand the vital role that a healthy environment plays in supporting ecosystems, and we’re committed to protecting it through rigorous bio-security measures. Our goal is to safeguard against harmful pests and diseases, ensuring the sustainability of our plants, the environment, and the broader industry.

 1. Supply Chain Management

  • Propagation Material Origin: We carefully review our supply chain to minimise risks, staying updated on the UK risk register and DEFRA legislation. High-risk Xylella host plants are sourced domestically whenever possible, with full provenance verification.

  • Propagation Facility: Plants from outside the UK are only sourced following nursery visits to inspect propagation facilities.

  • Plant Movement: Pre-border health inspections and phytosanitary certificates are mandatory for imports. On arrival, plants are quarantined, inspected for pests and diseases, and subject to DEFRA checks.

  • Record-Keeping: Our robust tracking system ensures complete traceability throughout the production cycle.

2. Propagation Best Practices

  • Growing Conditions: Plants are cultivated in field containers, glasshouses, and polytunnels, with adequate spacing to promote airflow and reduce the risk of airborne diseases.

  • Water Management: Overhead irrigation from our borehole is timed strategically to prevent waterborne diseases.

  • Growing Media: We use a heat-treated peat/bark compost, stored securely in cement bins. Recycled pots are used only for plants not susceptible to Xylella or similar diseases.

3. Nursery Husbandry

  • Weed Management: Tunnels, glasshouses, and growing beds are cleaned and disinfected after each crop cycle.

  • Plant Disposal: Failed plants are promptly removed and disposed of away from active growing areas.

  • Surrounding Areas: We monitor nearby hedges and trees in partnership with plant health inspectors to ensure plant health.

  • Water Management: Floods, leaks, and puddles are addressed immediately, with plants grown on free-draining surfaces above ground level.

  • Equipment Care: Tools like fleece, canes, and netting are stored in dry, clean areas when not in use.

  • Visitor Protocols: All visitors must sign in at the office to maintain site security and accountability.

4. Plant Health Expertise

Since 1989, plant health has been a cornerstone of our business. By working closely with trusted suppliers and adhering to plant health regulations, we aim to reduce the risk of pest and disease spread. Our practices include the use of plant passports, phytosanitary certificates, and continuous staff training to stay ahead of emerging threats.

Our Commitment
to
Xylella Prevention

We have a strict policy against knowingly sourcing plants from regions affected by Xylella outbreaks. This policy is reviewed regularly based on DEFRA guidance to ensure compliance with the latest regulations. For more information, refer to DEFRA’s list of host plants and affected regions.

By maintaining these stringent practices, Four Crosses Nursery continues to uphold the highest standards of bio-security, ensuring the health of our plants and the ecosystems they support.
